Reference Recipe

  • Hook wet fly / 1XL, 12-16
  • Thread gray 70 denier

Materials

  • Tail Brown permanent marker (hen hackle fibers)
  • Body Muskrat gray (superfine dubbing)
  • Hackle Grizzly and brown hackle (soft hen, 1 each)
  • Wing Gray flotation (matched duck-quill slips)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in a short brown hen tail half a shank long.
  3. Dub a slim gray body to the 75% mark.
  4. Wind a soft grizzly and brown hen hackle 2-3 turns, then sweep the fibers back and down with thread pressure.
  5. Set matched gray duck-quill wing slips low over the body, tips to the bend.
  6. Build a small head and whip finish at the eye.
