Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 12-16
  • Thread gray 70 denier

Materials

  • Extended body Adams gray (dubbing or deer hair, detached)
  • Tail Dun microfibetts (split microfibetts)
  • Wings Grizzly hackle (hackle tips, splayed spent)
  • Hackle Grizzly and brown hackle (1 each, stacked)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread mid-shank.
  2. Build a gray detached body off the bend with split microfibett tails one shank length long.
  3. Bind the body butt at mid-shank.
  4. Tie in grizzly hackle-tip wings splayed low and spent to each side.
  5. Tie in grizzly and brown hackles and stack 5-6 turns through the thorax for a dense footprint.
  6. Trim stray fibers underneath if you want it flush, then whip finish at the eye.
