Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 12-18
  • Thread gray 70 denier

Materials

  • Tail Moose/dun (hackle or hair fibers)
  • Body Adams gray (superfine dubbing)
  • Wing Natural case (deer hair, upright divided)
  • Hackle Grizzly and brown hackle (1 each)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread.
  2. Tie a tail of dun or moose fibers one shank length long.
  3. Stack a clump of deer hair, tie it upright at the 65% mark, and divide it into two wings with figure-8s and thread posts.
  4. Dub a slim gray body from the bend to the wing.
  5. Tie in grizzly and brown hackle at the wing base.
  6. Wind 4-5 turns fore and aft of the wing and tie off.
  7. Whip finish at the eye.
