Adam's Bastard Crab

Crab · Permit · Bonefish · Redfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater, rides hook-point up, 2-6
  • Thread tan 210 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Lead (1 dumbbell (bead-chain for shallow))
  • Tail Tan carapace (full marabou plus a few flash strands)
  • Body Tan/orange material (EP fibers, spun crosswise)
  • Legs Barred rubber legs (sili legs)
  • Weedguard Clear weed guard (mono (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lash a dumbbell eye on top near the eye so the fly rides point up.
  2. Tie in a full tan marabou tail extending just past a shank length, plus a few flash strands.
  3. Roll EP fibers into yarn-thick strands and bind them crosswise along the shank to build a flat, oval carapace.
  4. Add a pair of barred sili legs on the hook-point side after the first body strand.
  5. Continue crosswise EP strands to the eyes, packing a dense body, then trim to a crab-shell oval.
  6. Whip finish at the eyes and add a mono weedguard if fishing grass.
