Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry hopper hook, 6-10
  • Thread orange or yellow 140 denier / GSP

Materials

  • Body Orange (mottled brown) material (2mm foam strip)
  • Underbody flash Orange holographic tinsel (ice dub)
  • Wing Natural case (deer or elk hair)
  • Wing case/indicator Yellow or pink wing slip (foam strip)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (rubber legs)
  • Antennae Black ostrich herl (rubber legs)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the long hook and lay a thread base back to the bend.
  2. Bind an orange foam strip at the bend for the extended abdomen and segment it with 2-3 thread bands.
  3. Set two rubber-leg antennae over the eye pointing forward, then dub a touch of orange ice dub.
  4. Stack a deer-hair wing reaching the end of the foam and bind it down.
  5. Fold a contrasting foam strip over as a wing case and indicator, binding at the thorax.
  6. Figure-8 a set of black rubber legs at the thorax.
  7. Mottle the abdomen sides with a brown marker for realism, then whip finish at the eye.
