How to tie it
Put a size 4 hook in the vise and start the Cahill yellow thread.
Tie in medium black rubber legs as a forked tail.
Tie in orange foam on the underside as the underbody and tan or brown foam on top.
Build up girth, sectioning off the abdomen, then make triangle-style segment wraps back, advancing and wrapping straight across, and come forward in the other direction with an extra turn each time so the yellow shows in the segments.
Tie in two strands of Crystal flash (midge flash) doubled over twice, fold them over, and clip off the loops; the flash should reach about the end of the hook.
Stack a half-pencil-thickness clump of deer hair and tie it on over the flash as the overwing, a little longer than the body, with a few loose turns then tightened.
Tie another piece of the brown foam over the top, with a notch cut in it.
Add a yellow foam indicator and more rubber legs, left long to trim later.
Cover the work with orange dubbing.
Pull everything back; the orange underfoam makes the thorax. Tie in a long piece of black rubber leg as antenna, then trim the orange underfoam and cinch down and trim the indicator foam.
Add a final set of legs, one side left short to clip off, then whip finish with about four turns twice and trim.
Knot the legs at front and back, then dab brown Sharpie on the edges and underside with a tissue, leaving an orange stripe down the middle.
