Materials

  • Weight Lead wire
  • Tail Lemon wood duck flank (mallard flank will work)
  • Underbelly Yellow yarn, two strands of the four-strand yarn
  • Body Oxford gray yarn, two strands of four (light gray will work)
  • Hackle Grizzly, fibres stripped from one side

How to tie it

  1. Put a size 10 4XL streamer hook in the vise and wind 10 to 12 turns of lead wire on the shank.
  2. Start black thread and tie in a lemon wood duck (or bronze mallard) flank feather for the tail.
  3. Tie in two strands of yellow yarn; they go underneath and add a little bulk, but not too much.
  4. Strip the barbs from one side of a grizzly hackle feather and tie it in. The tyer says Nixon did this so the hackle would not twist the tippet.
  5. Tie in two strands of gray yarn for the body.
  6. Turn the fly over and tie in the yellow underbelly, without crowding the hook.
  7. Wind the hackle forward, taking care not to break it on the hook, then finish.
