  • Hook 4XL streamer hook, 10
  • Thread Black Standard

Materials

  • Lead wire (weight) N/A (10-12 wraps)
  • Lemon wood duck (or mallard) flank feather (tail) Natural mallard flank (1 feather)
  • Yarn (underbelly) Yellow wool yarn (2 strands)
  • Grizzly hackle (fibers stripped from one side) Grizzly hackle (1 feather)
  • Oxford/light gray yarn (body) Gray antron (2 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 10-12 turns of lead wire onto the shank and situate it down, then lay a thread base to secure it.
  2. Tie in a lemon wood duck (or mallard) flank feather at the rear for the tail.
  3. Tie in two strands of yellow yarn to be pulled underneath later as the underbelly, adding a little bulk.
  4. Strip the fibers from one side of a grizzly hackle feather and tie it in (stripping one side keeps the fly from spinning the tippet).
  5. Tie in the gray Oxford yarn and wrap it forward to form the body, keeping it slim.
  6. Turn the hook over and tie in the yellow yarn underbelly, keeping it off the eye, then wrap the grizzly hackle forward as a collar and tie off.
  7. Build a small head and whip finish.
