3D Glass Chironomid

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/buzzer hook, 10-16
  • Thread Red, black or olive to match 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Glass or 3D glass bead (contrasting) (1)
  • Body Colored tying thread or stretch floss (wrapped)
  • Rib Fine silver/pearl wire or tinsel (1)
  • Thorax/collar Peacock herl or fine dubbing (1-2)
  • Coating UV resin over the body (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a glass bead to the eye and start thread at the bend. Tie in fine wire for the rib.
  2. Build a slim, smooth abdomen of colored thread or stretch floss up to the front third, keeping the profile pencil-thin to match a natural chironomid pupa.
  3. Counter-rib with the wire in 5-7 evenly spaced turns for segmentation.
  4. Coat the abdomen with UV resin and cure for a slick, quick-sinking, glassy finish that also adds durability.
  5. Wrap a short peacock herl or dubbed collar behind the bead to suggest the thorax and emerging gills.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
