Classic Recipe

  • Hook Wet fly / nymph hook (Kamasan B175), 8-14

Materials

  • Tail Brown/ginger cock hackle fibers (1 small bunch)
  • Body Peacock herl (2-3)
  • Rib Fine copper wire (1)
  • Cheeks Pearl Flashabou or holographic tinsel (2 strands)
  • Beard/legs Brown/ginger cock hackle fibers (1 small bunch)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in a few brown cock hackle fibers at the bend for a short tail about one-third shank length.
  2. Tie in a length of fine copper wire, then two or three peacock herls; keep the body slim, using only 2-3 herls, and do not twist them.
  3. Wrap the herl forward into a slim body up to just behind the eye and tie off; the thin body is key to a fast, natural sink.
  4. Counter-rib with the copper wire in 4-5 open turns to protect the herl and add segmentation.
  5. Tie in a small beard of brown hackle fibers under the throat pointing back toward the point.
  6. Tie a strand of pearl or holographic Flashabou along each side as 3D cheeks for extra flash and dimension, then whip finish and cement.
