Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 10-12
  • Thread olive 70 denier

Materials

  • Tail Dark moose/dun (sparse, 6-8 fibers)
  • Body Olive-gray material (superfine dubbing)
  • Post White uni stretch (calf body hair or poly yarn)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed olive hackle (1 feather)
  • Thorax Olive ostrich herl (superfine dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start olive thread mid-shank.
  2. Tie in a sparse tail of moose fibers one shank length long, splayed slightly for float.
  3. Post a white wing upright at the 65% mark and wrap a thread base up and down it to stiffen.
  4. Dub a slim olive-gray body from the bend to the post. Keep it lean.
  5. Tie in the grizzly-olive hackle at the post base, then dub a fuller thorax through and past the post.
  6. Palmer 4-5 turns of hackle down the post and tie off beneath the wing.
  7. Whip finish behind the eye, clearing the hackle.
