3 Dollar Dip-Beadhead

Nymph · Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/pupa hook, 16-20
  • Thread brown 70 denier / 8-0

Materials

  • Bead Gold bead (1, sized to the hook)
  • Body Brown permanent marker (tying thread, tapered slim)
  • Rib Gold middle (fine wire)
  • Wing bud Natural dun wing bud (small clump of deer hair)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a gold bead to the eye and mount the hook; start brown thread behind the bead.
  2. Bind a length of fine gold wire along the near side and wrap thread down into the bend to anchor it.
  3. Build a slim, smooth thread body forward to just behind the bead. Keep it thin, half the bulk you think.
  4. Counter-wrap the wire forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns for segmentation, then helicopter it off.
  5. Stack a small clump of deer hair and bind it in behind the bead as a short wing bud reaching the midpoint of the shank, tips rearward.
  6. Snip the butts, build a small thread collar, and whip finish behind the bead.
