2nd Hand Muddler

Streamer · Smallmouth Bass · Largemouth Bass · Panfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Long-shank streamer hook (4X-6X long), 2-6
  • Thread Olive or gray to match 140 denier (GSP for spinning deer hair)

Materials

  • Tail Gray/olive marabou with a few strands flash (1 clump)
  • Body Jumbo Streamer Straggle (grey/olive) (wrapped)
  • Wing/collar Gray/olive marabou or arctic fox (1 clump)
  • Flash Pearl/gray flash (a few strands)
  • Head Spun and clipped deer hair (natural/gray), muddler style (1 bunch)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread at the bend and tie in a marabou tail about one shank length with a few strands of flash.
  2. Tie in a length of Jumbo Streamer Straggle and wrap it forward over the rear two-thirds of the shank; the dense straggle body pushes and moves a lot of water.
  3. Tie in a marabou wing/collar over the top and add a few flash strands for a baitfish silhouette that pulses on the pause.
  4. At the front third, spin bunches of deer hair and pack them tight to form a dense muddler head.
  5. Trim the deer hair to a broad, blunt head, flatter on the bottom, leaving a shaggy collar behind it; the clipped head displaces water and makes the fly dive and wobble.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and cement.
