Materials

  • Tungsten bead Copper or gold slotted tungsten bead (1, 2.8mm)
  • Lead wire Natural lead wire (20-25 wraps of .015)
  • Goose biots Golden stone (2 (tail))
  • Micro tubing Brown permanent marker (1 strand (woven back))
  • Micro tubing Light golden stone (1 strand (woven belly))
  • Mirage tinsel or Flashabou Pearl flashabou (1 strand (underbody))
  • Turkey quill slip Yellow barred turkey quill slip (1 (wing case))
  • Eco Warrior dubbing Golden stone (Small pinch (thorax))
  • CDC feather Natural cdc feathers (1 (collar))

How to tie it

  1. Slide the 2.8mm tungsten bead to the eye and take 20-25 wraps of.015 lead wire on the front half of the shank. Helicopter off the ends, add a drop of Zap-A-Gap, and push the wraps up behind the bead, leaving a little bare space directly behind the bead for the collar and wing case.
  2. Start the hopper yellow thread behind the lead and lay a thread base back to the bend, building a small thread bump at the start of the bend to help the tails splay.
  3. Tie in two golden stone goose biots prince-nymph style against the bump so they splay apart, about half a shank long. Take touching wraps forward to the lead, then trim the butts.
  4. Tie in the brown micro tubing along the near side of the shank and the light golden stone tubing along the far side, binding both back to the tail with tight, flat wraps so the fly stays wide and slim.
  5. Tie in the pearl tinsel, smooth out any bumps with thread, then wind the tinsel forward in touching turns to the bead and tie it off; this flash will glow through the translucent tubing. Whip finish and rest the bobbin in the cradle.
  6. Invert the hook and rotate it 90 degrees toward you, then weave the two tubing strands up the body: bring the light strand over the belly, capture it with a twist of the dark strand along the back, and repeat, keeping constant tension and lining each crossover up along the sides, until you reach the bead.
  7. Return the hook upright, take several tight thread wraps behind the bead to lock both tubing ends down, and trim the excess.
  8. Tie in a yellow barred turkey slip by its butt directly behind the bead with the tips pointing back over the body.
  9. Dub a compact thorax of golden stone dubbing over the tie-down area, stopping one bead-width behind the bead.
  10. Tie in a CDC feather by the tip and take 2-3 turns as a collar, sweeping the fibers rearward each turn, then tie off.
  11. Pull the turkey slip forward over the thorax and CDC, tie it down snug behind the bead, trim the excess, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
