1 O'Clock Midge

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly / midge hook, 18-24
  • Thread Black or gray 8/0 or finer

Materials

  • Body Black or gray tying thread / fine dubbing (wrapped)
  • Wing Bright white/hi-vis poly yarn or Antron (small tuft)
  • Hackle Grizzly or dun, wound or clipped (1)
  • Thorax Black/gray fine dubbing (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and wrap a slim, smooth midge body of thread or fine dubbing forward to the thorax.
  2. Tie in a small tuft of bright white or hi-vis poly yarn as an upright or downwing to catch the eye and aid visibility on the water.
  3. Tie in a grizzly hackle and take 2-3 turns around the thorax.
  4. Optionally clip the hackle flat underneath so the body sits low in the film like an adult midge.
  5. Dub a tiny thorax to finish the head, whip finish and cement.
