Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version
Classic Recipe
- Hook Standard dry fly / midge hook, 18-24
- Thread Black or gray 8/0 or finer
Materials
- Body Black or gray tying thread / fine dubbing (wrapped)
- Wing Bright white/hi-vis poly yarn or Antron (small tuft)
- Hackle Grizzly or dun, wound or clipped (1)
- Thorax Black/gray fine dubbing (pinch)
How to tie it
- Start thread and wrap a slim, smooth midge body of thread or fine dubbing forward to the thorax.
- Tie in a small tuft of bright white or hi-vis poly yarn as an upright or downwing to catch the eye and aid visibility on the water.
- Tie in a grizzly hackle and take 2-3 turns around the thorax.
- Optionally clip the hackle flat underneath so the body sits low in the film like an adult midge.
- Dub a tiny thorax to finish the head, whip finish and cement.
